Harry McGee, political correspondent with the Irish Times has been named as the most recent appointment to NUI Galway’s governing authority, Údarás na hOllscoile. Harry McGee is a native of Galway and an alumnus of NUI Galway, holding a BA (1987), H Dip in Journalism (1989) and an LLB (1993). He studied at King’s Inns and is a barrister. He worked in Galway with The Connacht Tribune before moving to Dublin where he worked with RTÉ, as Special Correspondent with the Sunday Tribune and as Editor of Magill.

President of NUI Galway Dr Jim Browne this week congratulated alumnus and RTÉ broadcaster Seán O’Rourke on taking over the mid-morning Radio 1 slot from Pat Kenny.

Kevin Faller was born in the Crescent in 1920. His father was John Patrick Faller and his mother was Madeleine Quinn from Tuam. They both died within six months of each other when Kevin was very young, so he and his brother Liam were brought up by their grandfather Stephen Faller. Kevin’s aunt Minnie, who was married to Nicholas O’Halloran, also helped to rear him.

The family of the late John Cunningham will launch a collection of his writings this evening. All proceeds from the book, which takes its title As I Saw It from Mr Cunningham’s popular ‘As I See It’ column in the Connacht Tribune, will go to the Galway Hospice Foundation.

No spot on earth is good enough for God’s House and “the place where His glory dwelleth”. The Square is the best Galway can give”.

The death occurred this week of former editor of the Connacht Tribune, Mr John Cunningham.

Every town needs its storytellers, its raconteurs who can fill a silence with a story plucked from the ether, who can use the power of words to shape situations, to create pictures in minds, to instil the emotions of laughter and to lift the tastebuds of imaginations. Every town and community needs to have an image of itself shaped through its wordsmiths who polish the mirror and hold it up to ourselves. On Tuesday night, Galway lost one of its best exponents of this art when John Cunningham passed away.
